THE AQUAMARINE

The Aquamarine belongs to the beryl family, has a hardness of 7.5/8 on the mohs scale and its blueness is due to the presence of iron oxide. Its name aquamarine comes from the Latin and means “Seawater”, referring to its color.

Brazil is the main producer of this wonderful gemstone. It can also be found in China, India, Mozambique, Madagascar, Nigeria, Pakistan…the most quoted are the stones from the Urals in Russia.

The Properties and Legend

JOS18735It is the birthstone of March or for those born under the sign of Pisces, it is said to have healing powers such as relieving the pain of a sore throat, swollen glands and thyroid problems.

During the medieval times alchemists thought the stone was preventing fluid retention and improved the digestion, it was used as an antidote to any poison.

It is said that the Aquamarine, were formed in the treasures of the fabulous sirens, for what reason sailors wear this beautiful stones as a talisman to protect them on long journeys and possible dizziness.

In jewelry the Aquamarine is a very precious gemstone for its hardness and color which can also be manipulated with a light heat treatment, a standard procedure to achieve the desired color – excessive heat can cause discoloration.
