There comes a moment when your watch gives you a warning. It stops suddenly. It starts gaining or losing time for no apparent reason. The crystal fogs up from the inside. The crown becomes stiff. These are signs that most people ignore until the problem becomes something bigger and far more expensive to fix.

At Zapata Joyeros we have been jewellers since 1955, and we have been caring for watches in Barcelona since 1981. We have seen all kinds of watches come through our workshop: everyday watches that simply needed a new battery, collector's pieces with decades of dried oil in the movement, watches that let in water because nobody checked the gasket before summer. And the conclusion is always the same: small problems have quick solutions. The ones that are left to wait, not so much.

"My watch has stopped"

If your watch is quartz and has stopped suddenly, the most likely cause is the battery. It is the most common diagnosis and the quickest fix. But before it stops completely, your watch usually gives you a warning: the second hand starts jumping every five seconds instead of moving second by second. This is the signal the manufacturer builds in to indicate that the battery is reaching the end of its life. If you notice this behaviour, do not wait until it stops: bring it in before the depleted battery can leak and damage the movement.

There is something many people do not know: a poorly executed battery change can be the start of a much bigger problem. When the case is opened, the water resistance gasket is exposed. If it is not checked and replaced when necessary, the watch loses its water resistance, and any subsequent contact with water can irreversibly damage the movement. This is why at Zapata Joyeros every battery replacement always includes a water resistance test: it is not an add-on, it is the minimum standard any watch worth caring for deserves.

If your watch is automatic and has stopped, the diagnosis is different — it could be lack of winding, a rotor issue or something in the movement — and we assess this on the spot as well. In some cases, depending on the watch and what it needs, we work directly with the brand: whether it is under warranty, because the repair requires it, or because it is the best route for that particular piece.

"My watch is gaining or losing time"

A watch that gains or loses time erratically usually has one of two causes. The first is magnetism: magnetic fields from everyday objects such as phones or magnetic bag clasps can affect the movement's hairspring and cause sudden timekeeping variations with no visible sign of a problem. Demagnetisation is a quick and straightforward process, but it requires the right equipment to be done correctly.

The second cause is degraded lubrication: the oils inside the movement dry out over time and the friction between the internal parts increases, causing timekeeping variations that become progressively more pronounced. In this case, the solution is a full service of the calibre. In our workshop we measure timekeeping accuracy with a digital timing machine before and after any service, so you can see the difference in real data.

"The crystal is fogged up from the inside"

If you can see condensation inside the crystal, water has entered your watch. This is an emergency. Moisture deteriorates the internal components of the movement and destroys the lubrication. The longer it stays in, the more damage it causes. If this happens to you, bring it in as soon as possible: time matters.

The cause could be a worn gasket, a poorly executed battery change, an impact that compromised the seal, or simply the passage of time without a service. Impacts on the crystal deserve special attention: even if the crystal does not visibly crack, a hard knock can compromise the case seal and allow water in without it being obvious to the naked eye. Whatever the cause, the process is always the same: opening, drying, damage assessment, gasket replacement and a certified water resistance test before closing.

If the crystal is deeply scratched, has bubbles or has cracked, we also replace crystals in our workshop. It is a routine repair that restores the watch's legibility and original appearance, and always includes a seal check afterwards.

"Can I wear my watch in the water?"

The short answer is: our general recommendation is no. And this applies even to watches whose manufacturer specifications list them as water-resistant. Technically some watches are better suited to water than others, but the real problem is not just the case's resistance rating — it is the crown. A poorly closed crown, which happens more often than people realise, can allow water in within seconds regardless of how many metres of water resistance the watch has on paper. The damage that water causes inside a movement can be devastating and costly to repair.

On top of this, the water resistance gaskets degrade over time with heat, salt water and exposure to sunscreen. A watch that was water-resistant from the factory several years ago may have lost that property with nothing visible to indicate it. Barcelona is a city by the sea, and every summer we see the consequences of misplaced confidence in our workshop.

If you decide to swim with your watch regardless, the minimum precaution is to bring it in beforehand for a water resistance test: we subject the watch to a calibrated pressure chamber and verify that it holds the values specified by the manufacturer. If it does not pass, we replace the gaskets before any water gets in. It is quick, affordable, and could save you a much more expensive repair.

"It has scratches and I want it to look like new again"

Scratches on the case and bracelet are inevitable with everyday wear, and over time they can significantly affect the perceived value of the piece. A watch with severe signs of wear can lose between 20 and 30% of its value on the second-hand market. Professional polishing can noticeably restore a watch to its original appearance, but it must be done at the right time and in the right way.

At Zapata Joyeros polishing is carried out with full respect for the original finishes of each piece: polished surfaces are restored to a mirror finish, brushed or satin zones retain their texture. Aggressive polishing that homogenises all surfaces can reduce the value of a collector's watch, not increase it. This is why we always assess before intervening, especially on vintage or limited edition pieces where the patina of use may be part of the historical value.

"It has not been serviced in years and I want it to last many more"

If you have an automatic or mechanical watch that has not been serviced in more than five years, even if it appears to be working fine, damage may be quietly accumulating. Lubricating oils degrade regardless of use: a watch kept in a drawer for ten years has oils just as dried out as one worn every single day. The difference is that the one worn daily will already be showing the consequences.

A full service in our workshop includes complete disassembly of the calibre, ultrasonic cleaning of every component, microscope inspection, replacement of worn parts with original spare parts, precision lubrication, isochronism regulation and a final water resistance test. It is the intervention that restores the movement to the performance it had when it left the factory, and the one that ensures the watch keeps running perfectly for the next ten or twenty years.
