Communion and Baptism Jewellery in Barcelona

Selection of communion and baptism jewellery in 18k gold - Zapata Joyeros Barcelona

The Zapata Joyeros guide to choosing a piece that isn't just worn on the day, but kept for a lifetime.

In brief — three direct answers

Communion? A watch, a medal or a cross. The pieces with the most history, the most worn, and the ones that age best with the person.

Baptism? A bracelet engraved with the name and date, a gold medal or a traditional safety pin. Pieces kept for a lifetime that become family heirlooms over time.

With personalised engraving? Come in at least one week before the celebration. Without engraving, most pieces are ready within 48 hours.

Some gifts are opened, used for a season and then forgotten. Others become part of a person's story. A medal worn on communion day and still treasured thirty years later. A watch first worn at twelve that still keeps perfect time today. A gold baptism safety pin that a grandmother has kept in a special box for decades and now wants to pass on to her granddaughter.

At Zapata Joyeros we have been part of those stories since 1955. And what we have learned, after more than seventy years accompanying Barcelona families through their most important moments, is that the gifts that endure are not necessarily the most expensive ones. They are the best-chosen: with the right material, the right meaning and the honest guidance that makes the difference.

This guide is written to give you exactly that information. So that when you come into our jewellery store — or before you do — you know clearly what options exist, what sets each piece apart, and why some communion and baptism jewels become family heirlooms while others end up forgotten in a drawer.

The argument

Why a Piece of Jewellery is the Gift
that Lasts Longest

Think about the gifts you have received throughout your life. Toys break. Clothes are outgrown. Books are read and left forgotten on a shelf. But a well-chosen gold jewel does not age, does not get outgrown and does not go out of style. It adapts, transforms and is passed down.

It is the only type of gift that can accompany a person from childhood to old age, and that can continue telling a story long after. At Zapata Joyeros we work exclusively in 18-carat gold: the only material that guarantees a piece will retain its beauty as on the first day, for decades, without special maintenance and without losing the lustre it had when it was given.

Communion guide

Four Pieces with Their Own History,
One Single Standard: Made to Last

Communion watch for a child - First Communion gift Zapata Joyeros Barcelona

The Communion Watch

A quality watch given as a First Communion gift has something that few jewellery pieces can offer: the ability to grow with the person. A boy or girl of twelve who receives a fine watch can wear it at twelve, at twenty and at forty. It can become the piece worn on special occasions, the object associated with that particular moment in childhood.

It is also the most common communion gift for boys, and in our experience it is usually the one they use most and remember best. The watches we recommend for communion celebrations are simple and elegant, without excesses, that look equally good at twelve as at forty. A watch still working perfectly decades after communion day is not just an instrument for telling the time: it is tangible proof that things made well endure.

Communion medal in 18k gold - Zapata Joyeros Barcelona

The Communion Medal

The religious medal is the most deeply rooted communion gift in Spanish tradition, and not without reason. A medal of Our Lady, the Christ, a patron saint or a guardian angel is not just a piece of jewellery: it is a tangible reminder of a moment of faith and family. That is why they are kept like few other things in life.

At Zapata Joyeros we work with communion medals in 18-carat gold, in different sizes and motifs. Size matters more than it might seem: a medal well-proportioned for the age and build of the person who will wear it is worn with pride; an oversized one is rarely worn at all. The chain that accompanies it is as important as the piece itself, and we always select it according to the weight and design of the medal so that the overall piece is harmonious and withstands everyday use. A medal engraved on the back with the name and date ceases to be just any jewel and becomes an object with its own history.

18k gold cross for communion - Zapata Joyeros Barcelona

The Communion Cross

The gold cross is one of the most timeless communion gifts in existence. It is not merely a religious symbol: it is a piece worn in childhood that remains perfectly elegant at forty. That capacity to cross time without ageing is what makes the cross a classic that never goes out of style.

At Zapata Joyeros we work with communion crosses in white and yellow 18-carat gold: plain, with small engraved details, with a fine stone at the centre. For someone with a more classic taste, a plain yellow gold cross. For a more contemporary look, a white gold cross with a matt finish or a small diamond. The cross pairs equally well with the communion outfit as with everyday clothing, and the child who receives it holds in their hands a piece to be worn in countless situations for decades to come.

18k gold scapular for communion - Zapata Joyeros Barcelona

The Communion Scapular

The scapular is one of the communion jewels with the greatest spiritual and symbolic significance. Formed by two small medals joined by a chain — one resting on the chest, the other on the back — it represents Marian protection and devotion in its most traditional form. For families with a deep and rooted faith, it is a gift whose meaning goes beyond any other piece.

At Zapata Joyeros we work with them in 18-carat gold with the most common motifs: Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Immaculate Conception, the Sacred Heart. These are pieces that combine the delicacy of quality goldsmithing with the symbolic weight of a centuries-old tradition, and in our experience they tend to be the gift that most surprises and moves the most traditional families.

Baptism guide

Three Pieces for
the Very Beginning

The baptism is the first great event in a baby's life, and the jewels given at this celebration are usually the very first that child will ever have. That gives them a particularly sentimental dimension: these are not pieces for everyday use, but for keeping, for treasuring, for passing on. They are pieces that mark the beginning of a story.

Baptism bracelet in 18k gold - Zapata Joyeros Barcelona

The Baptism Bracelet

The baptism bracelet is the most common jewellery gift at this celebration, and for very specific reasons. It is a piece that can be worn on the day of the baptism, that appears in the photographs, that godparents and grandparents can see on the baby's wrist during the celebrations. And afterwards it is kept, treasured and becomes an heirloom.

At Zapata Joyeros we work with baptism bracelets in yellow 18-carat gold, exceptionally fine, perfectly finished. The engraving is the detail that transforms a beautiful bracelet into an irreplaceable one: the baby's name and baptism date engraved on the inside make it unique in the world. In our own workshop in Barcelona we go over every detail with you before any final engraving: typeface, spelling, arrangement of the text. Nothing is engraved until you are completely sure.

Baptism medal in 18k gold - Zapata Joyeros Barcelona

The Baptism Medal

A baptism medal is, for many families, the very first jewel that baby will ever own. And that status as "the first" gives it a sentimental weight that very few things can match. It is worn on the day of the baptism, photographed and then kept. And years later, when that child is an adult, that gold medal depicting a guardian angel or the Virgin will be one of the most meaningful objects they possess.

The baptism medals we work with at Zapata Joyeros are pieces in yellow 18-carat gold, with traditional religious motifs: guardian angels, the Virgin Mary, the Sacred Heart, images of patron saints. Small in size, perfect in finish. All the delicacy of fine goldsmithing concentrated in a piece that fits in the palm of a hand and that can be just as perfect in fifty years as on the day it was given.

Gold baptism safety pin - Zapata Joyeros Barcelona

The Baptism Safety Pin

If there is one jewel that defines the baptism in Spanish culture, it is the gold safety pin. Few pieces carry such a deeply rooted symbolic charge: the baptism safety pin is fastened to the baby's clothing on the day of the celebration, protecting and adorning at the same time, and afterwards it is kept as one of the most cherished objects in the family's history.

At Zapata Joyeros we work with baptism safety pins in 18-carat gold, in different designs and finishes: plain and classic, with small decorative details, with religious or infant motifs. All share the same commitment to the quality of the material and finish, because we know that piece will not be thrown away: it will be kept. It is also one of the most common godparent gifts, and a choice that never fails.

Personalised engraving in our own workshop - Zapata Joyeros Barcelona

Our own workshop

Engraving: Where the Story Begins

A name, a date, a short dedication. Those few characters on the inside of a bracelet, on the back of a medal or on the side of a watch transform a beautiful jewel into a unique object in the world, one that can never be confused with any other. The person who receives it senses this, and that is what makes the gift remembered always. A jewel without engraving is a beautiful jewel. A jewel engraved with "William, 17th April 2026, from your grandparents with all our love" is an object with its own story, a specific date, real names.

In our own workshop in Barcelona we carry out engravings with the care they deserve. We show you exactly how it will look beforehand — typeface, spelling, text arrangement — and nothing is engraved until you are completely satisfied. Please bear in mind that personalised gifts cannot be returned, precisely because they are unique.

Before you buy

What We Always Tell Our Customers

01 · The Material

Always choose noble materials. 18-carat gold retains its beauty as on the first day for decades, with no special maintenance. At Zapata Joyeros that is the standard we follow without exception for all our communion and baptism jewels.

02 · Timing

If you need personalised engraving, come in at least two weeks before the celebration. Without personalisation, most pieces can be ready within 48 hours. Don't rush: a decision like this deserves the time it needs.

03 · Proportion

A medal or cross that is too large for the build of the person who will wear it is rarely used regularly. We always ask about the age, build and style of the recipient, and show physical options so the choice is visual, not theoretical.

04 · A Joint Gift

Godparents and grandparents who want to give a joint gift, aunts and uncles who coordinate to reach something more special than any one of them could manage alone. Come in together whenever you like; we will give you all the time you need. Some of the most beautiful pieces we have ever put together were born from those conversations.

05 · What if it isn't quite right?

Pieces without personalisation can be exchanged within our standard return period. Engraved gifts, being unique, cannot be returned. In any case, at Zapata Joyeros there is always a solution, and we find it together.
