How to Choose Wedding Bands: A Jeweller’s Guide

Wedding bands during a wedding ceremony - Zapata Joyeros

Yellow, white or rose gold. Slimmer or wider. Polished, satin-finished, set with diamonds or made to measure. Choosing a wedding band seems simple until you begin to discover all the possibilities.

In brief — five decisions before you choose

Which gold should you choose? Yellow, white or rose 18k gold. None is inherently better than another: what changes is the colour, the overall look and how the band works with the other jewellery you wear.

What width? It depends on your hand, the design and how you want the band to feel. A single millimetre can make a much greater difference than it appears once the ring is on your finger.

Do both bands have to match? No. They can share the same idea without having exactly the same width, profile, finish or design.

With or without diamonds? It is a personal and aesthetic decision. One or several natural diamonds can be incorporated without the piece losing the character of a wedding band.

Existing design or made to measure? Both are valid options. What matters is that the proportions, size and comfort genuinely work on your hand.

✦ ✦ ✦

Few pieces of jewellery are intended to be worn for as long as a wedding band. You first put it on on one particular day, but the intention is to keep wearing it for years. That is why choosing one purely from how it looks in a photograph only tells half the story.

The colour of the gold matters, but so do the width, thickness, inner shape, outer profile, finish and the way each design sits on a different hand. Even two wedding bands that look almost identical at first glance can feel completely different when you try them on.

At Zapata Joyeros we have worked with jewellery since 1955, and we make, adjust and transform pieces in our Mandri workshop. In this guide, we explain what we look at when helping a couple choose their wedding bands and which decisions are worth taking the time to consider.

01 · The metal

Yellow, White or Rose Gold
Which Should You Choose?

18k yellow gold

It is probably the most classic image of a wedding band. Its warm tone is immediately associated with gold and works particularly well when you are looking for a traditional, timeless and instantly recognisable aesthetic.

It can also be a natural choice if most of the jewellery you normally wear is yellow gold, allowing all the pieces to sit comfortably together.

18k white gold

It has a cooler and more discreet appearance. It is often chosen by people accustomed to steel, platinum or white-toned jewellery and works particularly well with diamonds.

It is worth remembering that the final appearance of white gold also depends on its finish and surface treatment, so its maintenance may differ from that of yellow gold.

18k rose gold

Its warm but less traditional tone gives the band personality without requiring a complicated design. It can work equally well in very simple bands, contemporary designs or pieces set with diamonds.

A jeweller’s tip: do not choose the colour of the gold by looking at an isolated piece alone. Try it on your own hand and, if you regularly wear other jewellery or an engagement ring, see how the pieces work together.

02 · Proportion

Width Makes a Much Bigger Difference
Than You Might Think

The difference between a 2.5 mm band and one measuring 3.5 or 4 mm may appear very small. On the hand, however, it is immediately noticeable. It changes the presence of the piece, its proportion in relation to the finger and how it feels to wear.

A slimmer band can feel more discreet and visually lighter. A wider band has greater presence and gives more room to work with certain finishes, volumes or details.

There is no single correct width for everyone. That is why we always recommend trying different widths on your own hand before deciding.

03 · The profile

Rounded, Flat or Square
Shape Changes How It Feels

The classic wedding band usually has a gently rounded profile, but that is far from the only option. A flatter section creates a cleaner, more contemporary look, while a squarer band can gain character without needing additional decoration.

Even in an apparently straight design, gently softening the edges and carefully considering the inside profile can make a significant difference to comfort.

An important detail: two wedding bands can have the same width and gold colour yet feel completely different because of their profile.

04 · The finish

Polished, Satin or Matt
The Same Band Can Look Completely Different

The finish determines how the surface of the gold reflects light. A high-polish finish creates a more classic and luminous appearance. Satin or matt finishes reduce reflection and give the band a more understated character.

Different finishes can also be combined within the same band, creating subtle contrasts that give the piece its own identity without making the design unnecessarily complex.

05 · The couple

Do Both Wedding Bands
Have to Match?

No. And that is one of the things that gives couples the greatest freedom when choosing them.

A couple may choose exactly the same design or simply retain one shared element: the colour of the gold, the finish, a particular proportion or an interior detail. Each band can then be adapted to the hand and personal style of the person who will wear it.

The two pieces can belong together without being identical.

06 · Diamonds

A Wedding Band Can
Carry Diamonds Too

Adding natural diamonds does not mean a wedding band has to become an ostentatious piece. A single diamond, a small sequence of stones or a half-eternity style can all be incorporated while retaining a very clean aesthetic.

With these designs, it is important to consider not only appearance but also the arrangement of the stones, the type of setting and how the wedding band will sit alongside other jewellery, particularly an engagement ring.

07 · Ring size

A Good Wedding Band Starts
with the Right Size

Ring size should not be decided solely from another ring or from a quick measurement taken at home. The width and profile of the wedding band itself can change how the same size feels on the finger.

When trying one on, we look for a simple balance: it should pass comfortably over the knuckle and, once in place, feel secure and comfortable without being excessively tight or constantly turning.

08 · The personal detail

The Engraving that Only
the Two of You Understand

Names and the wedding date remain the most classic choice, but they are far from the only possibility. A word, initials, coordinates, a symbol or a reference that only means something to the couple can make the inside of the band the most personal part of the entire piece.

The exterior can remain completely understated while the entire story is kept on the inside.

Made for you

What if No Wedding Band
Feels Exactly Like Yours?

Sometimes the best solution begins with an existing design. At other times, the width needs to be changed, a profile softened, the finish altered, a stone added or the process started directly from an idea.

At our Mandri jewellery workshop, we can study each wedding band individually and develop a proposal adapted to your hand, your style and what you want the piece to represent.

One final recommendation

Do not leave the decision until the last minute.

Trying different designs, choosing finishes, checking ring sizes and, when necessary, making or personalising a piece all take time. Choosing your wedding bands should be part of preparing for the wedding, not an urgent decision just before it.

The most important wedding band is not the most complicated one. It is the one that still feels like yours years later.
