The value of jewelry
Today I went through my jewelry box—it's something we should all do from time to time. I found unmatched earrings, pairs of earrings without clasps, and loose clasps without earrings. Bits of metal in a little bag I swear I've never seen before, and the occasional broken chain that, if I recall correctly, I promised to fix the last time I saw it.
At the bottom was the ring all of us in the "gang" bought on that wonderful end-of-year trip, and pendants that take me from one city to another, a bracelet inscribed with the phrase: the best mom in the world, and several pieces that I hold in my hands and fondle with nostalgia...
My best memories are locked away in my jewelry box: my birth, my graduation, my wedding, the birth of my children... each piece kept in it conveys a different emotion.
Today the broken chain has gone into my purse... so next time I go to a jewelry store, I'll leave it to be fixed, as well as a pendant that's missing a stone, and a pair of earrings that I haven't worn in ages and don't have the stick on the back.
There are guidelines for calculating the price of a piece of jewelry, the weight of the metal, the size of the stones... But sentimental value isn't something that can be measured. Some people have a special attachment to a piece that may not have an excessive material value, but for that person, it holds incalculable value.
A piece of jewelry transports you to a memory stored in your mind, makes you relive a special moment you've already experienced, and speaks beautiful words of love into your ear. Those who give jewelry silently say "I love you." That's why, at important life moments—births, weddings, graduations, and anniversaries—we receive jewelry that immortalizes the moment.
These jewels sometimes pass through our workshops. It's moving to hear the stories they hold. The owners part with them for a few days, filled with unbridled nostalgia, asking us to take care of them, and they leave the store with regret, longing to return to collect them.
The alterations, cosmetic touch-ups, and/or transformations are handled with care by our artisans, who are mindful of the meaning of the piece to its owner.
At Zapata Joyeros, we encourage you to give with enthusiasm. A jewel given today guarantees a memory tomorrow.
